Borivali (Marathi: बोरिवली) is a suburb located in the north-western parts of Mumbai. It can also be written as "Borivli". Borivali is approximately 18 km (11 miles) from the Mumbai airport and 33.4 km (20.8 km) from the Churchgate railway station. Borivali's estimated population in 1991 was more than 6 lakh (609,617).
Borivali city has developed in the areas of what was earlier called Eksar, Kandivali, Shimpoli and others found in and around Mount Poinsur between the two rivers Tulsi and Poinsur. The influence of Portugese language and existence of churches and the Mandpeshwar, Kanheri caves reflects the rich history of this place. Borivali was written by the British as Berewlee and is also known as Borivli.
The Sanjay Gandhi National Park is located in Borivali east near the Western Express Highway (NH 8). The park boasts of the presence of lions, panthers and other wild life. Amongst it other main attractions is the the fourth century BC archaeological site called Kanheri Caves which is also located within the park. These caves have a very prominent and huge statue of lord Mahavir. The Mandapeshwar caves also found in Borivali, these are located in the west. These caves have a rich history and are considered to be the abode of Shiva. Gorai Creek is located on the west coast of Borivali. This place is known as a crossover point, Essel World, Water Kingdom, the Global Pagoda (Vippasana) can be reached quickly through the Gorai Village.
