Chembur (Marathi: चेंबूर) is a suburb in Mumbai India. It is 22 km from downtown and 20 km from Mumbai Chhatrapati Shivaji International Airport. Chembur has been served by the Harbour Line of Mumbai suburban railways. This is a major transit point for people traveling to Pune using the highway or Mumbai-Pune expressway. Chemburkar (Marathi: चेंबूरकर) is a Marathi word which means a resident of Chembur.

Before 1950, Chembur was an idyllic village. During this period it had been a favorite picnic spot and weekend hangout for the inhabitants of the city of Mumbai (then Bombay). Many parts of northern and eastern Chembur (now Tilak Nagar, Chedda Nagar Sagar and Pestom) were wetlands that used to be submerged at high tide. The home of the beggars was created by the government in the road near Ghatkopar-Mahul Chembur Naka and home for destitute women was established in Sion Trombay road.

Chembur was not part of the main city until 1948-1949 and then merged with the Bombay Municipal Corporation around approximately 49-50. The first BEST bus started in Chembur  in the mid-fifties. Two refineries, Atomic Energy Organization (BARC, as it was then) and Rashtriya Chemical Fertilizers Factory (formerly known as FCI) and the Tata Institute of Social Sciences and the International Institute for Population Studies, developed in Chembur around 1954-60. The industrial activities and waste incinerators also raised air pollution in the district which eventually earnt it the nickname "The gas chamber in Mumbai."
