Dadar is a central suburb in Mumbai, and is also a railway station on both the Western (Dadar) and the Central lines (Dadar T.T.) of the Mumbai Suburban Railway network. It is situated in the heart of Mumbai and acts as a transit point for thousands of passengers using the Mumbai Suburban Railway due to it's location on the Central and Western Rail Network.
Since historical times, it has been a cultural center.
The railway line cuts across Dadar and splits it into Dadar East and Dadar West. Dadar East is popularly called Dadar Central while Dadar West is (not so commonly) referred to as Dadar B.B. Dadar West market is a very popular shopping destination for residents of central Mumbai, the suburbs and distant satellite towns.
The famous Shivaji Park, a huge playground which has been home to some of the best cricket players in the world, including Sachin Tendulkar and Sunil Gavaskar is situated here.
The Shivaji Park Residential area, a predominantly upper middle class residential zone, is a highly sought after area in South Mumbai because of its proximity to the Dadar Chowpatty, Shivaji Park and the famous Siddhivinayak temple in Prabhadevi.
It is also home to the Mumbai Mayor's Bungalow, the official residence of the Mayor of Mumbai and the famous Sena Bhavan, the headquarters of the political party Shiv Sena.
Dadar is home to the Plaza movie theatre. It is one of the few theaters in Mumbai that show Marathi movies.
There are Marathi and English medium schools from 1st standard till the 10th.
The Lokmanya Tilak Bridge (the oldest bridge in Mumbai, having been built in 1923) is situated here and it is made of only hard granite type of rock and hard English made metal. The bridge connects the east side to the west side.
Maharashtrian food like Batata Vada, Vada Pav, Thalipith, Sabudana Vada, Misal Pav, Usual Pav, Puri Bhajji, Piyush (a sweet drink) are popular food treats in Dadar. There are many restaurants that serve Maharashtrian food like Prakash Hotel, Dattatraya Hotel, Aswaad Hotel, Tambe, etc. for food and Panshikar for Sweets.
