The Haji Ali neighborhood is located in South Mumbai, other than being one of the prime locations in Mumbai it is also famous for being the home of The Haji Ali Dargah which is a mosque and dargah (tomb) located on an island off the coast of Worli in the southern part of Mumbai. Lying as it does in the heart of the city, the mausoleum is one of the most recognizable landmarks of Mumbai.
An exquisite example of Islamic architecture of India, associated with legends about doomed lovers, the mausoleum contains the tomb of Haji Ali Shah Bukhari Sayed.
The Haji Ali Dargah was built in 1431 in memory of a rich merchant Muslim, Haji Peer Sayyed Ali Shah Bukhari (RA), who abandoned all his worldly possessions to a pilgrimage to Mecca. The reporting requirements of Bukhara, in the ancient Persian Empire and now in Uzbekistan, Bukhari has traveled the world in the early 15th century half, then moved to Mumbai.
According to the legends surrounding his life, once the Holy saw a poor woman crying in the road, holding an empty vessel. He wondered what was wrong. She sobbed that that her husband will thrash her as she stumbled and accidentally spilled the oil she was carrying. He Asked her to take him to the locality where she lost the oil. He pointed towards the soil and the entire ground was flodded witj oil. the Lady was excited and filled her basket with oil and left home.
Later, Pir Haji Ali Shah Bukhari (RA) use to get a recurring dream - that he had wounded the Earth by his act. Filled with remorse, he soon fell ill and directed his followers that when he died his coffin carrying his body should be emersed in the arabain sea. Haji Ali left Peacefully to heavenly abode while he was traveling to Mecca and miraculously the casket that carried his body floated back to these shores,that got stuck at the shores at the beach Worli. Thus the Haji Ali Dargah was built here.
On Thursdays and fridays the holy place is visited by more then 40000 pilframs.Regardless of the faith and religion, pilgrams visit the holi place to seek the blessings of the almighty.Pilgrams visiting the dargah get to here a lot of sufi music speacally on friday. Such Music is more famous by the name of Qawwali.
