Santa Cruz or Santacruz (Marathi: सांताक्रुझ) is part of the municipality of Mumbai. It is also the name of Santa Cruz (station) in Mumbai Suburban Railway. Domestic Terminal at the airport in Mumbai and one campus of the University of Mumbai is in Santa Cruz. Khar / Santacruz Ward is H East and H West Chambers of the Municipal Corporation of Greater Bombay and had a population of 675,951 people in 1991 over an area of 12.98 square kilometers, giving it a density of population of 36,668 persons per square kilometer.
The name Santa Cruz is the Portuguese word which means Holy Cross. The name was given to the church which was to the west of the site of the station, currently in use by Sacred Heart Boys High School / Church of the Sacred Heart of Swami Vivekananda Road, which was destroyed during the conquest by the Marathas for the region of Portugal. The former parish church gave its name to locality. The church was built in the early 1930s. The congregation is a congregation of about 14000 with Fr. Abel, as the vicar there. Origin of name can be traced back to the Portuguese authorities as a wooden cross in front of the church to give the leaves and flowers had to be called the Holy Cross, or Santa Cruz.
Santa Cruz is surrounded by Vile Parle in north, Khar, in the south, Juhu which is in west and Kurla at East. It is basically divided into two regions: Santa Cruz (East) and Santa Cruz (West) Mumbai Suburban Railway. Milan subway and metro Khar linking the two zones, which passes under the railway. MMRDA has constructed a pedestrian bridge that extends from Podar School Complex (west of Santa Cruz) for Western Express Highway (east of Santa Cruz).
Santa Cruz (east) consists of Prabhat Colony, Kalina and Vakola. It also includes land owned by the Airport Authority of India, composed of the Mumbai Airport and Air India Colony (which has Kalina). The main roads through the Santa Cruz (E) are the Western Express Highway, Nehru Road, Kalina-Kurla Link Road. PINCODE of this area is 400 055.
